Beginner's Guide to Lucid Dreaming

Question Yourself when you're Awake:
When you're awake in your day to day life, consistently ask yourself if you're dreaming and don't just assume that you are. If anything odd or unusual occurs ask yourself if you're dreaming and think about it for a while. In our dreams we always assume we're awake, so this will help you pick up the habit in your dreams.

Recall Your Dreams:
You need to remember some of your dreams in order to notice anything unusual in them. If you have trouble recalling your dreams, you should keep a dream journal and write your dreams down on paper. Over time you'll start to notice things that don't usually occur when you're awake.

Waking up during the REM or dream stage will allow you to recall your dreams. Once the REM or dream stage is over and you enter deep sleep the memory of the dream is erased. Have someone keep watch over you as you take a nap and have them wake you up when they see your rapid eye movement. This is when you're having a dream and it may help you remember it if you are awakened in the middle of it.

Notice Key Points:
Anything unusual or illogical can be a key point or clue that you're dreaming. For example, you're naked in public, animals can talk or there are zombies. However, some dreams are very realistic and you may have to hunt for subtle key points, which is why it's good to pay close attention to your dreams.

Often times your dreams will be so sad or scary that you don't see these minor key points. If a dream consumes you of a strong feeling of dread you may be so wrapped up in it to even question if you're dreaming. A good example of this is a death of a close loved one or going to prison. These overwhelming emotions can also be used as key points.

Question Yourself when you're Dreaming:
Once you notice a key point in your dream then you must question yourself if you're dreaming or not. If you have any thought whatsoever that you may be dreaming or any ounce of doubt that you're awake, you probably are dreaming.

Test the Dream:
The best thing to do is to test to see if it's a dream. Try to hover, levitate an object, imagine something appear or disappear. You can also just start walking away and see if the dream starts to change. If it works, you're dreaming. Keep it in your mind that these occurences are not normal and you are definitely dreaming.
