Sleep Paralysis
What is Sleep Paralysis?:
Sleep paralysis occurs when the body isn't fully awake, but the brain is, causing the person to be unable to move. It is often associated with out of body experiences.
Entering REM:
When trying to fall asleep, have you ever experienced a feeling of suddenly falling through the bed or a loud buzzing or humming sound that jolted you awake? This may be common when you're extremely tired because you're brain is already entering the REM stage whereas your body has barely started to relax. Most of the time you don't experience this while entering REM because you're already asleep.
The Sleep Paralysis Experience:
Now imagine that short one-second jolting experience lasting much longer. Sleep paralysis usually happens, not when a person is going to bed, but when they're ready to wake up.
There's usually a very loud buzzing or humming sound and the person is mostly awake. They can't move at all and they feel a lot of pressure pinning them to the bed. Their eyes are sometimes half open and they can only see what's right in front of them and sometimes the image is distorted because they are partially asleep. For example you may see a horse in your doorway and later find it was a small plastic horse on your dresser that appeared to be standing in your door from the view you had.
Most people report a strong feeling of fear and a sense of evil over them, and they often associate that sense with the only object they see. So, if all they see is a cabinet, that cabinet seems to hold the evil that is keeping them paralyzed.
Some people have gained some control, trying as much as they can to get up and run away in slow motion, trying to yell for help with nothing coming out. However, this occurs only in the mind and their body is still very much asleep in bed. Once their body wakes up they are able to move again.
